Are you a new mum? You might be wondering if you can or should fast while you’re breastfeeding.
If you are healthy and can eat and drink enough between Iftar, the evening meal, and Suhoor, the morning meal, fasting during Ramadan should not affect how much breastmilk you make.
If you choose to fast while you’re breastfeeding, you can get advice from your GP, midwife or health visitor to help you do this.
Babies over five days old should have six or more wet nappies per day and two dirty nappies a day until they are four-six weeks old. After six weeks, babies will develop their own regular pattern for nappies which should stay the same throughout Ramadan if you’re breastfeeding and they’re getting enough milk.
You may wish to speak with your faith leader to discuss options such as delaying your fast.
