After hearing about our internship in September last year, Zakaria Sulieman, 24, joined the Care Group a month later. His successes in the job not only led to an extension of his internship, but he has now joined the Care Group full-time. This is part of a growing trend where we’ve been able to hire local young people into new and exciting roles.
Zakaria was a computer science student at the University of Westminster and applied for what he described as ‘a perfect fit’ for the digital design and development internship. He completed his studies during the Covid-19 pandemic and so any job interviews Zakaria had done to date were all virtual.
He said: “This was my first face-to-face interview for a job, I was so very nervous.” Thankfully, our interview panel put him at ease straight away and he was able to impress in the interview.
During his internship he applied and was successfully hired to a full-time position as an events and training administrator at the Care Group, starting in March. This new role means he will now be delivering some of our new work for NHS England, supporting the North East London Training Hub. He will continue to use his digital design and development skills showcased in the internship.
Layla Abdi, Equalities Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator, who interviewed and supervised him during his internship, said: “He has been a pleasure to have on board, and I think I speak for the whole team when I say we are all thrilled that he has secured this role.”
Reflecting on his internship, Zakaria said: “I’m happy internships are offered to people like me who are otherwise struggling to find jobs. It gave me the opportunity to demonstrate I’m reliable, hardworking and eager to learn and earn.
One project he got to work on was to develop the Somali Health Education website, giving him real job satisfaction.
“The aspect I enjoyed the most was enhancing other people’s ideas and bringing my own ideas to projects, he said.”
We'd like to encourage anyone looking to start their career to apply for an internship with us.
